Graduate Research

One feature of The Graduate School that makes study here so special is that students have the opportunity to put classroom theories into practice in very substantive ways. Through internships and assistantships, graduate students also have many opportunities to explore career options that lead to job offers after graduation. For example:

  • Marine Biology students benefit from alliances with the National Ocean Service, National Institute of Standards and Technology, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Medical University of South Carolina. Some have investigated changes in gene expression in shrimp, oysters and dolphins under a series of different immunological, physiological and/or environmental conditions.
  • History students can intern with a multitude of important local historical sites. Students have many prestigious options—such as Charles Towne Landing, Drayton Hall, and Fort Sumter—to share their love of history and engage in research.
  • Graduate students in the Public Administration program have initiated a program-development project that helped local high schools increase the number of graduates who are prepared for college, and conducted a demographic data analysis of patients served by a local, free medical clinic.
